Opening Day!

Today is one of my favorite days of the whole year.  It’s right up there with my birthday and Christmas.  Today is Major League Baseball’s opening day!  (OK, so two games took place yesterday, but most of the league and my Cardinals start TODAY!)

Today is the day every baseball fan has hope.  We are all equal, we all get a fresh start, we all get a shot at the title.  We have clean stadiums, clean uniforms, clean slates.  The boys of summer take the field today and carry each of us with them.  We can smell the freshly cut grass, feel the warmth of the sun, and hear the soft scuff of clay against our cleats.   Our shoulders square as the pitcher toes the rubber, our pulses quicken as the ball is released, and our breath catches at the crack of the bat.

Black, white, Latino, Asian, white collar, blue collar, no collar, conservative, liberal, north, south, east, west, American League, and National League share a passion today.  We are united in our collective anticipation, and we are connected in our hope that this could be our year, our shot, our chance to be part of something bigger than ourselves.  This is our day to believe.

Play Ball!

  1. Opening Day cannot be beat. It fills the fans with anticipation, makes us look forward to a long summer filled with rooting for OUR team…no matter how soon they fall out of contention.
