Song-A-Day: December 16 – Feliz Navidad

Feliz  Navidad Amigas,

Tonight marks the start of the posadas in many Spanish-speaking countries.  I’ve always loved this tradition and wish we did it around here. The children of the neighborhood travel from house to house (or nativity to nativity) reenacting the roles of weary travelers to Bethlehem.  At each nativity they sing a little song asking if there is room in the inn.  The home families play the role of innkeepers and turn them away singing in reply that they have  no room. This goes on at several houses until they reach the prearranged home where the host offers them a place to stay for the night.  They kneel at the manger and pray, then everyone celebrates together with food and music and pinatas.  This continues for the novena, the nine nights before Christmas.

Isn’t that lovely?  No matter how busy your day gets, or how tough you think you have it during the last few days of Holiday rush, there is a nightly reminder of what really matters.

While we may not all walk the posada or ask for room at the inn, hopefully we can take a little bit of that Spanish spirit with us over the next 9 days.
